Steps are where bad hardscape gets exposed. Treads have to be dead level under a four-foot straight-edge, risers consistent within a quarter-inch, and the connection to the porch or patio above can't telegraph the seam in winter. We over-build the base under steps and dimension the stone so that doesn't happen.
